Case · Mechanical Service
A 1970s automatic that hadn't run in years
Situation
A Seiko 5 from the early 1970s, brought in by the owner's son after it was found in a drawer following his father's passing. The watch had not run for at least a decade. The crystal was scratched and the strap had deteriorated.
What was done
Full strip-down and ultrasonic cleaning. Several pivot jewels were found dry. Fresh lubrication and timing regulation to +6 seconds per day. Crystal replaced with a period-correct mineral glass. Strap sourced to match the original style.
Outcome
Watch returned in full working order after 16 days. Owner noted it was "better than it probably was when my father bought it." Written summary and original worn parts returned in a small bag.
"It runs, it looks right, and now I can wear it. I didn't expect that."
Case · Heirloom Restoration
A Swiss dress watch from the 1950s
Situation
A Swiss manual-wind from the mid-1950s, previously belonging to a British woman's mother. Case was worn but intact. The movement had not been serviced in an unknown length of time. One lug had a hairline crack that needed careful attention.
What was done
Work was staged over three phases agreed in advance: movement service, case refinishing (light hand-polish only, retaining patina), and crown replacement with a period-sourced equivalent. The lug crack was stabilised. Duration: 11 weeks total.
Outcome
Watch returned wearable and running within ±8 seconds per day. Original crown, crystal, and a replaced mainspringed were returned in an envelope. Owner described the result as what she had hoped for rather than what she had expected.
"Getting the original parts back, even the ones that couldn't be reused, was the right thing to do."
Case · Care Visit
A diver's watch before a liveaboard trip
Situation
A quartz dive watch due to be used on a week-long liveaboard trip departing from Chumphon. The owner wanted confirmation that the seals were sound and the battery had adequate life before spending extended time underwater.
What was done
Battery replaced (previous battery had only partial life remaining). Crown gasket and case-back gasket renewed. Water resistance tested to 10 ATM using a pressure testing instrument. Watch reassembled and tested again before return.
Outcome
Completed in a single afternoon. Owner collected before close of business and was on their way south the following morning. Test certification included with the written summary.
